Start sewing in minutes (universal guide)

  1. 1) Set up & power on

Place the machine on a stable, flat table with good lighting. Plug it directly into a wall outlet and switch it on.

    • Position the foot pedal where you can operate it comfortably.
    • If your machine has a speed slider, set it to the middle for a gentle start.
Tip: Remove the accessory table to use the free arm for sleeves and trouser legs.
  2. 2) Wind the bobbin

Place an empty bobbin on the winder, route the thread through the marked guides, and wind for a few seconds. Cut the tail with the built-in cutter (if available) or scissors.

    • Use the bobbin type specified for your machine (often 11.5 mm/class 15 or brand-specific).
    • Wind evenly; too tight or too loose may cause irregular stitches.
  3. 3) Insert the bobbin

Top-load (drop-in): place the bobbin in the case under the needle plate and pull the thread through the slot and tension spring.
Front-load: insert the bobbin into the removable case, pull the thread under the spring, and click the case into the hook.

Important: Make sure the thread feeds in the correct direction (usually counter-clockwise). Wrong direction = looping.
  4. 4) Thread the upper thread

Raise the presser foot (opens tension discs). Follow the numbered path: top guide → tension discs → take-up lever → needle guides → needle eye.

    • Automatic needle threader? Use it; otherwise thread from front to back.
    • Pull both threads about 10 cm (4") to the back under the presser foot.
  5. 5) (Optional) Bring up the bobbin thread

Hold the upper thread, turn the handwheel toward you once, and pull the loop of bobbin thread up. Helpful for quilting or a super-neat start.

  6. 6) Select a stitch & test

Select a straight stitch for seams or zigzag to finish raw edges. Adjust length and (if available) width using buttons or dial.

    • Always test on a scrap of the same fabric.
    • Use reverse/backtack or lock stitch to secure start and finish.
  7. 7) Sewing

Place fabric under the presser foot and lower it. Start with the foot pedal or (if available) the Start/Stop button. Guide the fabric—do not push or pull; the feed dogs move it.

Curves: stop with the needle down, lift the presser foot, pivot the fabric around the needle, lower the foot, continue.

Quick choices: needles, thread & fabrics

  • Woven cotton/poplin: 80/12 universal, polyester or cotton thread #50–60.
  • Knit/jersey/fleece: ballpoint/jersey 75/11–90/14, stretch or polyester thread; use a stretch stitch or narrow zigzag.
  • Denim/canvas: 90/14–100/16 jeans/universal, longer stitch (2.8–3.5).

Starter essentials

  • Set of universal & jersey needles (70/80/90)
  • Extra bobbins (type matching your machine)
  • Quality all-purpose polyester thread
  • Zipper, buttonhole & blind-hem feet (often included)

1-minute maintenance

  • Switch off & unplug.
  • Open needle/plate area, remove lint with the brush.
  • Replace the needle regularly (about every 8 hours of sewing or at first signs of trouble).

FAQ

Loops or skipped stitches

Rethread with presser foot up, check bobbin direction and that thread passes the slot/spring. Replace bent/dull needle.

Which presser foot?

Zigzag/all-purpose for most stitches, buttonhole for buttonholes, zipper for zippers, blind-hem for invisible hems. Match the icon on your machine.

Do I always need to bring up the bobbin thread?

Not always. Many top-loaders allow sewing straight away. Bringing it up is useful for extra-neat starts (quilting/precision).

Safety: unplug before changing needle/foot or cleaning. Always turn the handwheel toward you.
